The mission of the Downtown Hamilton SID is to create, maintain, and promote a business environment that is attractive, welcoming, and conducive to economic development for business, cultural activities, and recreation. It is also essential to encourage and preserve the aesthetic, architectural, and historic character of the district. For these reasons, the SID found it imperative to undertake the major capital improvements of the Streetscape project that will form the backdrop for continued development and growth.
Simultaneous with the creation of the SID, the board of trustees petitioned Hamilton City Council to make designed capital improvements to the public rights of way in the SID area. These improvements collectively became known as the Streetscape project and include recommendations for a complete facelift for Downtown Hamilton. With its unanimous approval of the Streetscape plan in April of 1998, Hamilton City Council joined the members of the Special Improvement District in a common vision for a vibrant and beautiful Downtown Hamilton.
On September 23, 1998, Hamilton business and government leaders broke ground for nearly $5 million of capital improvements that will be made over the next two years within a four-block area of Downtown Hamilton. The event was a major milestone in the phenomenal revitalization of the Butler County Seat and the evolution of its center, an area known as the Downtown Hamilton Special Improvement District.
Throughout the design phases, the Special Improvement District Board of Trustees worked with the architects to incorporate the concerns of the community into the best plan possible for Downtown Hamilton. The result is a design that maintains the wide streets and enhances current traffic patterns while improving access to available parking and creating an enjoyable experience for pedestrian traffic.
Tree-lined sidewalks will be accented with brick pavers and blue granite diamonds. Seasonal and evergreen plantings in new medians and along the walks will create a focus on the architectural highlights. A large pleasant pedestrian area will be created in Journal Square and scattered with café tables and ornamental trees. Comfortable benches will be placed strategically along the sidewalks and a trellis-laced walk through Journal Alley will connect to unlimited parking just a block off of High Street. Ornamental street lighting will complement the overall atmosphere in Downtown Hamilton to successfully combine new development with historic renovation in a unique business environment.
